Pedestrian injury
$15,310,603.15 — A pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle while crossing the street. The driver of the motor vehicle did not see the individual, because a truck, which had been parked facing the wrong direction, had its lights on, temporarily blinding the driver of the car. The injuries included, among other things, a severe brain injury, multiple rib fractures, clavicle fracture, and torn rotary cuff.
Motor vehicle passenger injury
$3,650,000 — This case involved a passenger in a motor vehicle, broad-sided by another vehicle that ran a stop sign. As a result of the impact, the passenger was ejected from the vehicle. One of the issues involved his failure to wear a seatbelt. The injuries included brain injuries and numerous orthopedic injuries.
Truck driver injury
$1,500,000 — A truck driver’s tractor-trailer was struck head-on by a car, causing the tractor-trailer to jack knife and overturn. The injuries included cervical disc herniations at three levels leading to a posterior cervical decompression and fusion.
Motorcyclist injury
$1,500,000 — The firm’s client was operating a motorcycle when he was struck by a vehicle making an illegal turn. The motorcyclist sustained injuries consisting of left clavicle fracture, left patella fracture, left shoulder dislocation and rotator cuff tear, right ankle fracture and femoral shaft fracture. Surgery consisted of open reduction internal fixation of left patella, the implant of a left femoral IM rod implanted, open reduction internal fixation of the right ankle fracture and left shoulder arthroscopic repairs.
Lunch truck worker injury
$935,000 — The firm’s client was working inside of a lunch truck when it was struck by a vehicle. Although the impact was minor, at the time the lunch truck was struck, the client was slicing a bagel and had her back to the hot oil fryer. The impact of the accident shook the lunch truck, causing a wave of hot cooking oil to splash onto her back, left arm, hip and leg. The client underwent third-degree skin grafting to her left and right scapula. She also suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression as a result of the scarring from her burns.
Product liability injury
$600,000 — A client’s left foot was struck by a falling file cabinet drawer. The allegation against the manufacturer involved a claim that the drawer slides for each individual tray were not connected and were undersized such that a file drawer could unexpectedly fall unless both sides were pulled out together. The injuries included reflex sympathetic dystrophy of the left foot. The surgery performed consisted of a neurolysis, left superficial peroneal nerve and an anterior compartment fasciotomy of the left lower extremity.
